The Year 1996

The new album "Opiate of the People" was released at the beginning of the year containing unequivocal sentiments on the subjects of child abuse, the Church, drugs and the transience of existence. The band succeeded once more in capturing 18 highly melodious flashes of genius on tape. That "Zehn kleine Jaegermeister" ("Ten little Jaegermeister") - their ironic answer to of ten years of "Eisgekuehlte Bommerlunder" ("ice-cold Bommerlunder") - should turn out to be the smash hit of the album, was nevertheless something of a surprise. The first Number One in the singles charts for the Hosen!

The annual Rhineland Lent Carneval Parade saw the Hosen taking to the streets in fine ironic form with their motto "We are Good Taste's Funeral directors" and with the "loudest rig on wheels" (Campino). A real highlight in the band's career took place in Buenos Aires: Iggy Pop and the Toten Hosen had been invited by the Ramones to play their farewell concert, and for days their fans put the Argentinian capital into state of emergency. After the concert in the River Plate Stadium Andi commented: " That was the best concert I've ever seen the Ramones perform. When 50,000 Argentinians party, well, that's quite an experience". Breiti added: "It's the kind of experience that makes the whole thing worthwhile".

The "Ewig waehrt am Laengsten" ("Eternity lasts the longest") tour was an unmitigated success. Happy, smiling faces at sold-out venues, a two-and-a-half hour-long party every night with thousands of people singing along and having fun with the Toten Hosen. A dream come true for the boys - then, now and always. The summer saw the release of "Im Auftrag des Herren" ("By Order from On High"), their second live album in fourteen years, recorded towards the end of the first leg of the tour. In the autumn they finished off the second equally successful half of the tour.
