The Year 1991
Ronald Bigg's Birthday Party
Sometimes you need to take one step back to go forward. Once again the Hosen had to look for a new orientation, to reinvent themselves in a cosmos of their own creation. What better way to do it than to concentrate upon the original values and roots of their music, upon the heroes of their youth and the countless songs that provided the soundtrack to each individual Hosen-adolescence. The idea for "Learning English -Lesson One" was born.
Joey Ramone and Campino
The band invited their idols, some of whom had by now become their friends through years of touring together, into the studio and recorded 23 cover versions. The list included: Joey Ramone (Ramones), Handsome Dick Mantoba (Dictators), Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys), Captain Sensible (The Damned), Charlie Harper (UK Subs), Knox (The Vibrators), Nick Cash 999 and TV Smith (The Adverts) and many others. 23 song without which the Hosen would never have existed, 23 song without which they perhaps might not been able to carry on existing - all in all a "Who's Who" of punk rock. Sadness reigned too as Johnny Thunders died only a few days after the recording of " Born to lose".
The jewel in the crown of this spectacular collaboration was a trip to Rio where the five recorded the single "Carneval in Rio - punk was" with the legendary Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs, celebrating his birthday there in magnificent style. After all the research work, all the parties with friends old and new, all the fabulous experiences, the whole project was finally ready by the end of November. "Learning English - Lesson One" was also released in Japan, Australia and in the States .
