The Year 1990

Whether it was withdrawal symptoms from the studio, the delayed effect of German reunification or just pure genius, no one can actually say. "Kreuzzug ins Glück" wasn't just one piece of vinyl, but appeared in May as a double album. Amongst other things on the album was a "Drama in three acts," written in conjunction with the Bavarian cabaret artist Gerhard Polt and the band Biermoesl Blosn. Before it became their first number one and - as Breiti put it - their "qualification for the Champions League", the band embarked on a cycling holiday in spring.

For three weeks they cycled through the new states of a unified Germany with the band bus close behind with all the equipment ready for impromptu gigs. One up from that was the concert as support for the Rolling Stones in the Muengersdorfer Stadium in Cologne. "It was an away game for us" said Campino of the gig. " We simply had to get used to all the space." In keeping with that, there was a diversion to Italy to catch the World Cup, about which the Hosen filed daily reports for the "taz" (popular left-wing newspaper) and for diverse radio stations.

And then it was pack yet more bags a, first to the New Music Seminar in New York and then once more at home for the "Kreuzzug ins Glück" tour of the Federal German arenas. If the Horrorshow tour had brought with it as then unknown dimensions, this went a stage further. Mega fun and games in every department - full speed ahead, having the time of their lives, but maybe not hitting the brakes as often they should have. A young English journalist wrote in the British metal-bible Kerrang: "I came to Germany expecting to see a small German punk band in a tiny smoke-filled German club. Instead I witnessed a great rock band in a gigantic, packed arena!"

By the end of the tour the Hosen were road-weary, exhausted and burned out. What they needed was something new, a fresh idea, to stop the car from skidding off the race track completely and to put it back on course again. This idea came to them towards the end of the year as they were performing their first ever shows in London: "Learning English - Lesson One".
