Day Eight – Away Victory!

There was a good reason for Faust, Steve, Noppa, and Wölli to go to bed early the previous night: they were going to go deep sea fishing, and their boat was due to put to sea at sunrise. Six hours later they returned to the hotel, their faces turned red by the sun. In the trunk of their taxi, the tail of a 2.80 metre (9 feet) long marlin weighing 200 kilos (440 pounds avdp.) could be seen. Once this creature was safely stored in the cold room of the hotel Riviera, four busses were waiting for us outside, ready to pick up the entire crew plus our Internationalistas, the hard core fan brigade, to take us to the Estadio Pedro Marrero.

An incredible location: a huge stadium in Havana with the paint flaking off everywhere. We were to play a friendly football game: the Hosen vs. a selection of former Cuban national team players and local sports journalists. Although this had even been mentioned on telly, the fan block of the visiting guests (us) was by far the most crowded. But football is a minority sport here, way behind baseball, boxing, volleyball, and salsa.

Of course the local team had the advantage of being used to the climate in this “hell of Havana”, but we played fairly well from the start. But maybe it all came down to the doping. Only Campino, who stood on the football pitch for the first time since his crucial ligament had torn, wasn’t quite on top yet.

Although the person responsible for the outfits had failed us dramatically (by packing black shirts to wear in the scorching sun), the squad from Düsseldorf Flingern, supported by legionaries from Halberstadt and Rendsburg, won with an incontestable result of 3:0. The scores were made by Andi, Mike (from Rendsburg), and Pinki (from Halberstadt).

We swapped tricots and then went back to the Hotel for a final sun-downer at the Riviera bar. The first set of our people was to fly back to Germany tonight, while some were going to stay on to visit other parts of Cuba.

We had a great time. Good city, good people, good vibes: we’ll be back. For all of you who couldn’t join us: go visit the revolution before it comes to visit you or before Fidel abdicts and the Yankees come back, depending on the point of view.

Our thanks go to Uli, Hans-Jürgen and Fug of the Popkomm, who organised the trip and helped us over there.

Hasta la victoria siempre, venceremos!
